A Week in Northeast England: Exploring Coastal Gems and Countryside Charms

Welcome to my travel diary, where I’ll take you on a journey through the breathtaking landscapes and charming towns of Northeast England, venturing in our self built campervan called Roy. From coastal adventures to serene gardens and historic castles, our seven-day itinerary promises a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Day 1: The Coastal Retreat

Our adventure begins at the tranquil Filey Brigg, a haven for nature lovers and hikers. After soaking in the coastal beauty, we checked into our woodland based parking spot for the next two nights, Ladycross Plantation Caravan Park, a perfect base for our exploration.

Day 2: Coastal Wonders and Whitby Whimsy

We kicked off the day with a scenic hike from Runswick Bay to Kettleness, where the rugged cliffs met the endless sea. Afterward, I indulged in some paddleboarding in Runswick Bay. A delicious ice cream from a quaint shop called Tides Coffee Bar and Beach Shop overlooking the harbour was the perfect treat before we wandered into the charming town of Whitby.

Day 3: Alnwick Adventures

Leaving the coastline behind, we ventured north to Alnwick. The town’s historic charm beckoned us to explore its winding streets. The highlight of our day was a visit to the Alnwick Garden, where we marvelled at water features, the enchanting walled garden, and an orchard with swings. The garden was teeming with vibrant flowers and butterflies, while the “poisoned garden” added an intriguing twist to our visit. We later settled into our campsite at Doxford Farm Camping, this would be our base for the next 3 nights.

Day 4: Majestic Bamburgh Castle

Our day began with a full breakfast at The Landing on the edge of the beach in Beadnell. With full bellies we walked along the beach to stretch our legs and took a drive to visit to the iconic Bamburgh Castle, perched dramatically on the coast. We strolled along the sandy beach with the castle as our backdrop and explored the charming village of Seahouses, known for its seaside charm and fish and chips.

Day 5: Hiking and History

We embarked on a 4.5-mile hike through the picturesque Simonside Hills, revelling in the rugged beauty of the Northumberland countryside. Later, we visited Cragside, a National Trust property that seamlessly blends nature and technology. Its gardens, woodlands, and historic house left us in awe.

Day 6: Rainy Day Retreat

A rainy day couldn’t dampen our spirits. We drove through the lush landscapes of east Northumberland to Cumbria, stopping at galleries and shops to appreciate local artistry. A visit to Acorn Bank, another National Trust gem, offered a glimpse into its tranquil gardens and historic house. We found solace at our campsite, embracing the pitter-patter of raindrops.

Day 7: Homeward Bound with a Twist

As our adventure neared its end, we embarked on the journey back south along the M6. A pit stop in Lancaster brought a delightful surprise, a visit to the Butterfly House and mini zoo in Williamson Park. It was a perfect end to our unforgettable week in Northeast England.

Our journey through Northeast England was a perfect mix of coastal serenity, historic grandeur, and natural wonders. Each day brought new discoveries and memorable experiences, leaving us with cherished memories of this beautiful region. Until the next adventure!
